First Responders' Barbecue

Saturday, September 10 - 4:00 p.m.

10th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in 2001

On the 10th anniversary of the attacks on September 11, 2001, Saint Matthew’s Episcopal Church invited the first responders of our community and their families to a thank you barbecue, Saturday, September 10 at 4 p.m.

What a great day of community! Successful BBQ for First Responders supported by an amazing effort and turn out by all folks; followed by a moving Evening Prayer with a Litany of Remembrance. The images from NY on 9/11/01 were empressive. Good Job, sponsors (listed below) and all helpers. Thank you ALL first responders who are out there every day helping others!

We will set up between the jail and the church at 539 3rd Ave S.

Please come so we may honor you and those brave men and women who lost their lives doing their jobs.

For more information, call Father Mike Fay at 263-1041.

A Service of Evening Prayer with a Litany of Remembrance will follow at 5:30 p.m.

Weekend plans for dedications and services

8/8/2011: Sherriff Glen Meier estimates we might have as many as 150 people attending. The intended menu is hamburgers, hot dogs, beans and potato salad. After the meal, there will be a short service with a litany of peace and a te deum laudamus. I am also considering a vigil if anyone is interested. Sunday we will have the mass dedicated to the first responders and another litany of peace.

I want us to remember and honor those men and women who lost their lives doing their jobs; trying to help people and their sacrifice for others.

As Velma Kelly sings in the musical, Chicago: “But I can’t do it alone.” I need your help. I’ll take on the money gathering, the food negotiations, invitations and publicity. We’ll need help with grills, tables and chairs, set up and take down. Maybe we can borrow tables and chairs from the city. Again, I am of two minds about food prep. I think we can get donations of food, at least some, and then fix beans and potato salad for 150 people. Or, we could try for more money donations and cater the entire thing. Obviously time is short so we need to get going.

Below is a start with a prayer for peace:

Prayer for Peace

We have prayed for peace,

Unknowing of what we truly ask.

Peace cannot come into the house

Where love is unwelcome.

Peace cannot come into the land

Where injustice and oppression live.

Peace cannot enter or be fostered

In souls that still engage in dispute.

Peace does not come meekly and unarmed.

Peace needs the pathway of our will to change.

Peace will not come to the troubled world

Unless we first invite it under our own roof.

Blessings,

Fr. Mike+
